Community & Conservation

A visit to Loisaba offers more than just breathtaking landscapes and pristine beauty; it provides a window into sustainable land-use and the intricate bond between community and conservation.

A Harmony of Nature and Livelihood

While the vast expanse of Loisaba appears wild and untouched, it functions efficiently as a cattle ranch. In addition to its agricultural operations, Loisaba undertakes significant wildlife research and maintains a deep-rooted partnership with the indigenous community, the guardians of this land for countless generations. Guests at Loisaba experience Africa in its most authentic form, devoid of barriers and modern-day encroachments. Here, like the free-roaming animals, visitors are unrestrained. The integration of the local Samburu and Maasai tribes into the ranch's projects ensures that a stay at Loisaba not only contributes to environmental conservation but also supports the education and well-being of the people native to this spectacular region.

Empowering the Maasai Community

The Loisaba Community Conservation Foundation (LCCF) is recognized as a US 501 c3 Foundation. Its primary mission is to support the areas around Loisaba Conservancy by promoting community-led enterprises and fueling philanthropic, community-based initiatives.

For a deeper dive, please refer to the Loisaba Community Conservation Foundation Trust website.

Dedication to Conservation

Revenues from the conservancy fees and stays at Loisaba directly funnel into the conservation of a vast 230km^2 wilderness. Moreover, they back community-focused health, education, and entrepreneurial initiatives, particularly with the neighboring Samburu and Laikipiak Maasai tribes.

Loisaba's Anti-Poaching Brigade

In collaboration with The Nature Conservancy, Loisaba Conservancy boasts a specialized anti-poaching team, which includes four expert sniffer dogs – Warrior, Machine, Memusi, and Nanyokie – along with their skilled handlers. These canines, including bloodhound siblings Warrior and Machine and bloodhound-bluetick coonhound mixes Nanyokie and Memusi, come from renowned conservancies. Trained to be ever-ready, these dogs, alongside their handlers, undergo daily exercises, keeping them agile and prepared for any call of duty, near or far. Guests at Loisaba can witness these magnificent dogs in action through a tracking demonstration.

An interesting fact: Bloodhounds excel in tracking due to their staggering 200 million olfactory cells. Their unique droopy ears and wrinkled skin aid in capturing scent molecules, directing them to their highly sensitive noses.
