Neck & Neck with Nature: Nairobi’s Giraffe Centre

The Giraffe Centre, situated on the outskirts of Nairobi, Kenya, stands tall (pun intended!) as a testament to conservation efforts dedicated to the endangered Rothschild giraffe. This iconic sanctuary has, over the decades, become a beacon for wildlife enthusiasts, tourists, and locals alike.

Feeding the giraffes at the Giraffe Centre

History & Origin

Founded in 1979 by Jock and Betty Leslie-Melville, the Giraffe Centre began its journey as a rescue mission for the endangered Rothschild giraffe. When they learned that this particular species was at risk of extinction, with only about 120 individuals left in a ranch in Western Kenya, the Leslie-Melvilles took prompt action. They began with a young calf, Daisy, and soon the conservation vision expanded.

The Mission

The primary objective of the Giraffe Centre is threefold:

  1. Conservation: The Centre has successfully released over 40 giraffes into Kenyan national parks through breeding programs.

  2. Education: The Centre offers environmental education programs for the Kenyan youth, instilling the importance of biodiversity from an early age.

  3. Tourism: Offering a unique up-close-and-personal experience with giraffes, the Centre promotes sustainable tourism.

The Giraffe Encounter

A highlight for many visitors is feeding and interacting with these gentle giants. The elevated platform at the Giraffe Centre allows visitors eye-level interactions with the giraffes. You'll have an opportunity to feed them, stroke them, and if you're lucky, receive a slobbery giraffe "kiss"!

Warriors for Wildlife: The AFEW (African Fund for Endangered Wildlife)

The Giraffe Centre is operated by AFEW, and their efforts don't stop at giraffes. Through their initiatives, AFEW seeks to protect the habitat and biodiversity of Kenya's wildlife. They play an instrumental role in creating a harmonious coexistence between humans and wildlife.

Educational Initiatives at the Giraffe Centre

The educational team at the Centre is deeply passionate about their programs, coordinating interactive workshops tailored for children across all age groups, as well as for educators, covering a wide spectrum of environmental topics. A significant number of visitors, regardless of age, arrive with limited awareness of Kenya's remarkable landscapes and diverse wildlife. Our goal is to foster an appreciation for the environment, emphasizing the tangible advantages it offers both humans and wildlife, especially in an era marked by rapid population growth and increasing human intrusion.
